Polly Emmons has an MS Ed in Elementary Education with certification in both general and special education, currently a secondary special education teacher and mother of a child with Asperger’s Syndrome, and co-author of the book “Understanding Sensory Dysfunction” (Jessica Kingsley, 2005). Her son, Dylan, is a writing major at Ithaca College. Dylan hopes to educate and inform others of his life experiences and perspective of one living with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Dylan is now capable of articulating many of the social/sensory frustrations he experienced as a child. He and his mother will talk about specific challenges and obstacles that were presented and how these challenges and their “solutions” affected Dylan, then and now. This presentation will resonate with anyone who is parenting or has parented a child with Asperger’s Syndrome.

The Butt Stops Here
Are you ready to stop smoking? We can help you quit. The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council of Delaware County will be offering the Butt Stops Here. The Butt Stops here is a stop smoking program that includes educational materials, help with nicotine replacement medicines and one one support and motivation. The first meeting will be Wednesday March 30, 2011 from 5pm-6pm at the Delaware County Public Safety Building Conference Room B, 280 Phoebe Lane, Delhi, NY 13753. Class will meet each Wednesday for seven weeks ending Wednesday May 11, 2011. To make the step to be smoke free call the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council at 746-8300.

LEICC Meeting
The local Early Intervention Coordinating Council (LEICC) will meet Tuesday, March 8 from 1:30 to 3:30pm at Delaware Opportunities building, 35430 state Route 10 in Hamden. The LEICC advises and assists the Early Intervention Program for children from birth to age 3 who have developmental delays. The council holds open meetings two times each year and anyone who is interested may attend.
The state report for Delaware county's early intervention program will be addressed and ideas for improving family outcomes will be discussed.
Anyone with questions about the council or the program should call Delaware County Public Health at 607-832-5200 or plan to attend the March 8 meeting.

Are You the Parent of a Child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder?
Are you stressed?
A stress-manangment workshop is being provided by the Walton Central School District and the Institute for Child Development in order to provide parents tools for effectively managing and coping with stress in their lives. Here are some details:
- Who can attend? Parents of children with an autism spectrum disorder. Parents do not need to have a child enrolled in Walton Central School District to attend.
- When: Thursday February 3rd, from 6:00-7:30Pm. Additional workshops will be provided based on level of interest.
- Where: Walton High School Library, 47-49 Stockton Ave., Walton, NY 13856
- This workshop is being provided free of charge through the joint collabration of Institute for Child Development at Binghamton Universtiy and Walton Central School District.

Kimberly Wiggins, OTR/L is a licensed occupational therapist specializing in pediatrics for 9 years in the Broome County area. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Utica College of Syracuse University. She has worked extensively in public school settings, outpatient, and home-based services to children of all ages with a variety of diagnosis and needs. Kim is currently certified as a Handwriting Specialist with the Handwriting Without Tears program and as a provider with The Listening Program. She has presented numerous seminars and trainings courses related to handwriting and sensory integration to teachers, school support staff, counselors, speech therapist, OT's, administrators, and parent support groups. Please join us for this informative and dynamic presentation on sensory integration, as well as different types of sensory inputs. FDA announces recall of Abbott glucose test stripsStrips sold in retail stores, online and used in health care facilities
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today announced the agency is working with Abbott Diabetes Care to recall 359 different lots of glucose test strips marketed under the following brand names:
Precision Xceed Pro;
Precision Xtra;
Medisense Optium;
Optium;
OptiumEZ; and
ReliOn UltimaThese strips are used with Abbott’s Precision Xtra, Precision Xceed Pro, MediSense Optium, Optium, Optium EZ and ReliOn Ultima blood glucose monitoring systems. As many as 359 million strips may be affected by the recall. The blood glucose monitoring systems are not affected by this recall.
The recall pertains to certain lots of these test strips distributed in the United States and Puerto Rico. Other Abbott Diabetes Care products are not affected by the recall.
The test strips being recalled may give falsely low blood glucose results. False results may lead patients to try to raise their blood glucose unnecessarily, or they may fail to treat elevated blood glucose because of a false, low reading. Both scenarios pose risks to a patient’s health.
The recall is related to the test strips’ inability to absorb enough blood for monitoring. Strips exposed to warm weather or prolonged storage may be more likely to provide a false result.
The test strips were manufactured between January and September 2010 and are sold both in retail and online settings directly to consumers, but are also used in health care facilities.

Pfizer Adds Another Lot to October Lipitor Recall
December 21, 2010 (New York, New York) — Pfizer announced the recall of another lot--approximately 19 000 bottles--of atorvastatin (Lipitor) 40-mg tablets from the US market due to reports of the same "uncharacteristic odor" that prompted the recall of 191 000 bottles of Lipitor earlier this year [1]. The recalled lot is 0836050.
The company says that a medical assessment concluded that the risk of health consequences from taking drugs from this lot are minimal, but it is advising patients who have tablets from the recalled lot to return them to their pharmacist in exchange for a new bottle. Pfizer does not anticipate a shortage resulting from the recall.
After the first recall, the company found the odor was most likely coming from very low levels of tribromoanisole in the pill bottles supplied by an outside vendor. Tribromoanisole comes from a wood preservative used in pallets to transport and ship a variety of products. Pfizer prohibits its suppliers from using tribromoanisole-treated pallets to ship its products.
This is the fourth recall of this product for "odor" reasons.

Delaware County Public Health to hold Flu Clinic
Delaware County Public Health will be holding its last flu clinic on Friday November 12, 2010 from 9:30am to 11:30am, at Public Health 99 Main St, Delhi, NY 13753. Flu shots are available for ages 3 and above. The cost is $25.00 cash or Medicare Part B. No appointments needed just walk in. For more information call Delaware County Public Health at 832-5200.
