Sale Final for Delaware County Public Health Nursing Service

Delaware County has announced that the Certified Home Health Agency (CHHA) and Long Term Home Health Care Program (LTHHCP) operated by Delaware County Public Health Nursing Service is being sold to HCR (L. Woerner, Inc. d/b/a). The county has entered into a management and staffing agreement with HCR to provide staffing and oversight to the program until the sale is complete. The County plans to close the County owned CHHA in mid May 2012.
There are two certified home health agencies authorized to provide home care services in Delaware County: HCR and At Home Care, Inc. Patients currently receiving services from Delaware County Public Health Nursing Services have been notified of the option to select one of the two agencies if they require home care after the closure date. Public Health staff will assist CHHA patients in transferring to the agency of their choice. HCR will operate a Long Term Home Health Care Program (LTHHCP) and patients will have the option of selecting this program or being referred to the Office of Long Term Care for other home care services.
Public Health is committed to helping their patients with this transition process and assuring that the services they require to remain in their home will continue without interruption.
Delaware County Public Health Nursing Service has provided home visits since 1930 when the County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution to hire the county’s first public health nurse. The agency became a certified home health agency in 1986.
“It has been a privilege and a pleasure to provide home health services to the residents of Delaware County”, said Director Bonnie Hamilton.
The sale of the Certified Home Health Agency will not mean an end to Public Health services for Delaware County residents. Delaware County Public Health continues to offer other services mandated by the NYSDOH including Early Intervention, Preschool Special Education Program, Maternal Child Health Program, Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, Health Education Program, Communicable Disease Program, Rabies Control, Emergency Preparedness, and the Immunization Program.
For any questions regarding the closure of the Certified Home Health Agency and Long Term Home Health Care Program can call Bonnie Hamilton, Director of Delaware County Public Health at 607-832-5200.

New Drugs of Abuse Training

Delaware County Public Health will be hosting a presentation “Drugs of New Abuse” presented by Upstate Poison Control Center on Friday April 27, 2012 at 1pm. The presentation will take place at the Delaware County Public Safety Building, 280 Phoebe Lane, Delhi, NY 13753.
There has been a dramatic increase in calls to the Upstate New York Poison Center about man-made designer drugs, including synthetic marijuana and “bath salts”. The trend is also reflected on the national scope as calls to US Poison Centers continue to rise.
This seminar is for anyone working and interacting in the community, interested in learning more about these and other man made drugs including history, description and related symptoms.
This seminar will focus on 4-5 drugs such and is not intended for health- care professionals managing these cases but rather for those working in a “non-clinical” capacity who may encounter these drugs in their communities and who would like to learn more about them.
The training is timely due to the recent order from the New York State Commissioner of Health prohibiting the distribution and sale of synthetic marijuana.
Due to overwhelming response to interest in this topic, we ask that you please RSVP to Heather Warner of Delaware County Public Health at 607-832-5200 or heather.warner@co.delaware.ny.us by April 25th.

Early Help Make Difference

Most of the time, infants smile at three months; play pattycake at 12 months; and feed themselves with a spoon at two years. Some children learn and develop earlier; others may take a little longer. Usually these differences will even out.

Vera Buel of Delaware County Public Health recommends that parents look for signs that can indicate an infant or toddler might need extra help. If your child does have a problem learning or developing, the earlier you get help, the better. Early help makes a difference!

Every baby and toddler learns and develops in their own way. Learning at these young ages depends on the baby’s or toddler’s ability to explore the world and people around them.

She advises that any child from birth through the age of three who has a developmental delay, disability or condition that affects development is eligible for free services under the early intervention program at Delaware County Public Health. The program includes such services as hearing and vision screening; speech, physical and other therapies; family counseling and sometimes transportation.

The early intervention program can help you obtain the best possible health care for your child. A service coordinator will put you in touch with a professional who will evaluate your child’s development. Then, together, you’ll make a plan to get help for your child—and you.

For more information, contact the early intervention program at Delaware County Public Health by calling (607)-832-5200. http://www.delawarecountypublichealth.com/
